When an Absentia season 2 renewal should happen

Absentia season 2 renewal

Before we dive into this Absentia season 2 renewal discussion piece, let’s start off with a reminder: There are no spoilers within! We’re still on a holding pattern when it comes to discussing the story of the show until it airs in North America. (Remember, it has already secured a home in the US — it just hasn’t been announced yet — and it will air on Showcase in Canada.)

Now that we’ve said this, the main subject at hand here is that per all indications that are out there, we’ve got a good sense that there’s a big interest in making a second season of the show happen. There seem to be ideas for it behind the scenes, Stana Katic has spoken out about it, and this doesn’t appear to be one of those shows that was designed solely as a limited series. There’s been a plan for some time to continue it if the ratings and the attention are there.

While we don’t have the resource pool to get ratings from all of the different international broadcasters, we do get the sense that the show is performing rather well in some territories. We certainly know that it is generating a good bit of social media buzz — it has been virtually from the start of the series. Unfortunately, none of this guarantees a renewal, especially since social media posts are not always a barometer for actual ratings for a show.

Nonetheless, we do think that the best thing that Sony and AXN could do with Absentia is figure out a way to announce a season 2 renewal before the first season even premieres in America, and there is one clear reason for that: Consumer confidence. If you look ask around many casual viewers, one of the things that does frustrate them the most about the state of television at the moment is that so many of their favorites end up getting canceled before they get past the first season. Why get invested in something when a network doesn’t reciprocate it? Seeing in advance that this show has a second season could encourage some people on the fence to jump on board Absentia. This is a move that we’ve seen some networks give with their shows in advance of them airing anywhere; for Sony, they can at least have the confidence in knowing that the series is already out there in some territories and performing well there. It’s not entering its debut in America (wherever that may be) completely blind to how it’s done elsewhere, though without a doubt US ratings are still very much important.
