The Outlander – Golden Globes 2018 campaign: Early things to know

Outlander - Golden Globes 2018

Is it time to start the Outlander Golden Globes 2018 campaign? It could be based on some enthusiasm out there. We’ve received a number of questions over the past two weeks about the awards show in relation to the Starz series, and this article is meant to be a useful resource of information to prepare you for what could be a fun and (hopefully) fantastic awards season down the road.

Is Outlander eligible? Yes. While it may not have been eligible for the 2017 Emmy Awards, the start of season 3 fits well within the nomination window for the Golden Globes. They consider anything that airs within the prior calendar year to be eligible. Because this is the 2018 Globes, anything that aired in bulk during 2017 could be thrown into consideration. There are some things that get tricky here and there with the rules but with Outlander there shouldn’t be any confusion.

Who all is eligible? – That depends in part on who submits. It feels like a given that former nominees Tobias Menzies and Caitriona Balfe will be in contention alongside the unfortunately-snubbed Sam Heughan. Other actors could also enter the running but it would be reckless for us to confirm anyone as of this time.

What’s the timeframe? – The website for submissions for many movies/television shows is currently open, and it will remain that way for the next couple of weeks until October 31.

On November 24, all of the nomination ballots will be mailed to the various voters within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. They will have from then until December 7 to cast their votes for nominations. The nominations themselves will be announced on December 11 early in the morning. The final ballots will be mailed to voters on December 18 and they are required to be returned by January 3. The 2018 Golden Globes air on NBC come Sunday, January 7.

What are the chances of some nominations? – Moderately high. While it’s true that the Globes do often favor new series, they also have in the past favored both international productions and also period pieces. Outlander checks off both of those boxes. It also benefits from recency given that it will be airing throughout the voting window and it is more popular than ever before?

What are we going to do to get the word out? – We will have the annual Golden Globe nomination polls running next month, where we will share all of our favorite nominees across various categories from the CarterMatt team and allow you to do the same. It’s been great for gauging enthusiasm in the past. We will of course be available to conduct any campaign interviews as per requests that come in.

What can you do? – Continue to be positive and supportive! Share your love for the show and celebrate it online! Focus on its merits and don’t disparage any of the competition; if there are any potential voters out there online who stumble upon some discussion of Outlander you want them to come away feeling good and interested in voting for the show.

We did recently write a piece about a standout Balfe performance and you can read that over here.
