Supergirl season 3 spoilers: James Olsen – Lena Luthor tension ahead

James Olsen - Lena Luthor

When it comes to Supergirl and Lena Luthor, the one thing that is constantly brought up (of course) is her last name. She’s probably used to it at this point — it’s unavoidable and a huge part of who she is as a person. She may not be evil (at least based on the evidence that we have), but her legacy makes those around her wonder. For those like Kara, it’s easier to judge her at face-value. She’s a fairly trusting person who sees beyond family ties; however, for others the past may get in the way.

One of these said people who may have a problem with Lena coming into the future is James Olsen, and there’s a good reason for that. As Mehcad Brooks explained in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, he is the only regular character who has experience battling Lex Luthor with Superman back in Metropolis:

“Being who James is, he tries to give everybody a second chance or fresh start. However, there’s always this skepticism in the back of his head. She’s a Luthor. Is she purposely doing this or that? James is probably the most skeptical of all out of everyone. The rest of them don’t know Lex, at least not the way I do.”

Of course, where things are going to start to get a little bit interesting here is that Lena is technically now the owner of CatCo Worldwide Media. She bought it out from under Morgan Edge at the end of the premiere, and she may have a vision for how to deal with the company that different in some ways from what James feels is right. Add to this distrust over the past, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

Could the contentious nature of the James Olsen – Lena Luthor relationship turn into something else entirely? Here’s the thing: That is absolutely possible. One of the fun things that you do have to think about when it comes to Supergirl is that it likes to surprise here and there, and we know that James is getting a new love interest at some point this season. Lena is certainly one option, whereas the other is Samantha Arias. The terrible irony there is that Samantha ends up getting that job, bonding with James, and then it turns out that the person who is really the villain is someone James never imagines has the capacity to be evil. That’s a cruel irony and we would absolutely feel for James if that happens.
