Is Meghan Markle leaving Suits after season 7? The questions begin
The reality is that we know these questions were coming at some point. She’s in a relationship with Prince Harry, there’s significant engagement buzz between the two, and it’s a little bit unrealistic to think that someone who could be a part of the Royal Family in the United Kingdom could continue to be a series regular on an American television series filming in Toronto. Security this season around her is tighter than it’s ever been in the past, and to go along with that some other cast members have felt the aftereffects of her elevated status already. (Patrick J. Adams deleted his social media channels after an innocent comment he made about his character Mike Ross and Markle’s Rachel Zane was taken way out of context.)
Now, the Daily Star is reporting that Markle has already told executives that she is departing at the end of the season, which also makes some sense given that many contracts are up for the cast once this season is done. There is no indication that Suits season 7 is meant to be the end of the show but without Rachel, there would need to be another big shakeup to the show’s overall story. When Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) left the firm, that was a little easier to handle. For one, she keeps showing back up and has a spin-off potentially on the way; beyond that, Jessica is not romantically intertwined with another one of the show’s main characters.
Note that this news has not been confirmed as of yet by USA but if true, the writers will hopefully come up with a fitting end for Rachel that makes sense. Maybe she chooses to mirror the very charitable Markle in real life and depart in order to do some charity work overseas; this would enable her relationship with Mike to stay strong even if she is not present onscreen. We’d love to still see her return in the role down the road for a series finale, but it’s hard to know if that is even possible. While we’ve written at CarterMatt about a wide array of cast shakeups in the past, it’s a little bit different when you’re speaking about someone who could marry a Prince. These are not normal circumstances or conversations we’re used to having.
