Supernatural season 13, Arrow season 6 premiere ratings down; The Orville up

The first Arrow season 6 premiere ratings are in, and by and large the CW show performed roughly how we thought that it would on the day.

Overall, the Stephen Amell series, coming off of a big cliffhanger, generated a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That puts it right with Legends of Tomorrow as the #2 rated superhero show on the network this week; both shows lag behind The Flash, and in the non-superhero realm it also lags behind the big surprise of the week in Riverdale (which generated a strong 0.8).

The only disappointment we could see some having is Arrow not making it a tenth or two higher in the ratings, given that the show did have an enormous cliffhanger that should have generated a ton of interest in seeing precisely what transpired as a result of the Liam Yu explosion.

Elsewhere on The CW the premiere of Supernatural season 13 was reasonably steady, as it posted in total a 0.7 rating. While technically down versus the previous premiere this is still a solid start and something that The CW has to be happy with given just how deep into its run the show is.

Other bad news

On Fox, it’s starting to become all the more clear that Gotham is nearing the end of the road. With a 0.8 rating last night the show’s consistently drawing its lowest numbers and this is without it even airing against The Big Bang Theory, which will be moving over to this timeslot in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, Scandal (1.2) continues to fall over at ABC and while we don’t think that the ratings expectations for Will & Grace (1.7) were through the roof we did anticipate that the revival of the comedy was going to perform better than anything else on Thursdays. It is losing at present to Grey’s Anatomy, which held close to last week’s rating with a 2.0.

Some good news

For The Orville, we give the show credit for leveling off. We wish it was higher than a 1.0 rating, but good on Seth MacFarlane and company for finding an audience that enjoys the show. If they all stick around the rest of the season it does have a chance of getting that season 2 renewal in the end.

Elsewhere How to Get Away with Murder improved to a 1.0, but this is mostly in self-preservation mode right now. We think that The Orville an still gain viewers, but the Viola Davis is so serialized and so deep into its run that it will be tough for it to do the same thing.
