Riverdale season 2 premiere ratings soar; Dynasty so-so; Criminal Minds even

The Riverdale season 2 premiere ratings are in over at The CW, and let’s go ahead and coin this the big surprise of the week!

Given the recent performances of some of the other network series, including Supergirl premiering to a series low, we felt as though the Archie Comics adaptation was going to be lucky to finish with a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Let’s just say that they surpassed that. With a 0.8 rating in the demo the show far and away has posted its best rating to date, and it looks as though the network has every reason in the world to look at that Sabrina-centric spin-off currently in development even more closely than they have to date. The network needed a new hit like this that wasn’t just a superhero show and they now may officially have that.

Will the show maintain the entirety of this rating? Probably not, but it is nice to see that shows, even ones catering to finicky young viewers, can still build audiences on the basis of quality. This show may also be picking up the torch of Pretty Little Liars, which was in a similar vein at the time in which it first premiered many years ago. If the show can keep this momentum going, who knows? It’s possible that it could last just as long

As for elsewhere on The CW the premiere of Dynasty managed to secure in total a 0.4 rating in the demo. That is hardly the sort of performance that you will want to brag about but, in comparison to other dramas on the network, we’ve seen worse. It does have a good lead-in so time will tell if it is able to preserve this performance for some extended period of time in the long-term.

Decent news over at CBS

While we’d like to see both SEAL Team and Criminal Minds generate slightly better numbers than what they did on the night, there is still some relief that both shows held steady. As a matter of fact, many shows on the night did including Empire (1.9) and Survivor (1.6).

The sad news

It wasn’t the best night over at NBC, given that the latest episode of The Blacklist fell down to a 0.9 rating while Law & Order: SVU also slipped to a 1.2. Neither one of these ratings will doom the respective show, but obviously you do want to see some stronger performances across the board.
