Andy Cohen joining Anderson Cooper on CNN’s New Year’s Eve after Kathy Griffin exit
Today, it was confirmed that the Bravo executive, Watch What Happens Live! host, and close friend of Cooper will be joining him to help ring in the new year at Times Square later this year. Cohen is replacing Kathy Griffin, who was fired from her gig after taking a controversial series of photos with photographer Tyler Shields that feature her holding a fake decapitated head of Donald Trump. Griffin has also since said that her friendship with Cooper is over due to the lack of personal support she received from him after the fact.
We don’t want to focus too much on the negative within this article, mostly because of the fact that there is a lot of fun, positive stuff to discuss here! After all Cohen is a great host who knows how to throw a great party. With that, there is every reason in the world to think that this will be a great party with him on board, as well. The show is meant to be light, silly, funny, and a distraction from the serious news of the year. There are so many times where we turn on CNN these days and feel a sort of crippling depression. This time around,
“Andy is the life of the party wherever he goes, and what bigger party is there than New Year’s Eve? It is going to be a blast!” Added Cohen: “I’ve been friends with Anderson for 25 years. We’ve traveled the world together and performed in 30-plus cities with AC2 and it’s all led to this one huge night!”
Ultimately, we’ll see how the broadcast plays out when it happens but for now, we anticipate this being everything that we could possibly want from a broadcast this time of year. We feel like some of the other New Year’s Eve telecasts benefit too much from pre-taped performances or from having people wax poetic time and time again on what was not an altogether great year for everyone. Here, we’re going to have a chance to see a show that is a little lighter, maybe cynical at times, but by and large a good time. We appreciate shows that do something like this to mix things up and take a few chances.
Plus, we’re also glad here at CarterMatt that CNN is just continuing the broadcast rather than just allowing it to wither away in the aftermath of the Griffin controversy. That wouldn’t have been altogether fair to some of the people who enjoyed it the first time around.
