Being Mary Jane season 5 to come via two-hour series finale
The Gabrielle Union series, according to Deadline, is going to come to a close with a two-hour series finale movie that will air at some point in 2018. There may have been a decision to give the show a natural endpoint with this movie, and at the same time the move makes sense from a commercial standpoint. The ratings for Being Mary Jane season 4 were considerably lower than some other seasons of the show, and it was clearly hurt by taking such a lengthy hiatus at the end of season.
In a statement confirming the news of the show’s end today, BET Networks’ executive vice president and head of programming Connie Orlando had the following to say:
“Being Mary Jane has been a landmark series not only for BET, but for African American women around the world who saw themselves in Mary Jane, her family, friends and coworkers. From the captivating storytelling, to the richly complex characters, to the powerful issues tackled on the series, we remain immensely proud … We are grateful to the cast and creators of Being Mary Jane, who have worked tirelessly to bring this world to vivid life over the past 4 seasons. We also thank the many loyal viewers whose hearts and minds were captured every week, and kept Mary Jane trending worldwide. We look forward to closing out Mary Jane’s journey with a series finale that is sure to blow fans away!”
If you’re upset about only getting two more hours of Being Mary Jane just remember this: It’s two more hours than you necessarily had to get. We do think networks are at least making an effort now to conclude shows in a way that offer up some semblance of closure, which is not something that they were doing at one point. Given that this show was at one point a main staple and a ratings beast for BET it would’ve been a travesty to cancel it without wrapping anything up. With this in mind, we feel like most people really should be satisfied with the fact that we’re going to get something resembling a proper farewell here.
It is a little bit early to have more news to report on this subject, but rest assured that once there is a little bit more on the subject that is known, we’ll have it for you here at CarterMatt.
