Black Mirror season 4: Series exec on Jodie Foster episode

Black Mirror season 4

Black Mirror season 4 is going to premiere on Netflix later this year, and it seems fair to say that there is a good amount of momentum going for it at this point. The anthology series is coming off of a big Emmy win, and the popularity of some of its hyper-original, timely, and telling stories has never been higher.

To go along with this popularity the show is clearly getting an opportunity to do some more great things and work with some more great people. There’s going to be a big, epic space story that will have notes of Star Trek (albeit with a very Black Mirror twist to it), and there are also going to be smaller, intimate stories that the show is known for as well. The big news is that there is going to be an episode this season that is going to be directed by none other than the legendary Jodie Foster, and of course virtually everyone involved is excited about this.

While at PaleyFest in New York promoting the upcoming batch of episodes, show executive producer Annabel Jones expressed her excitement with the following (per Entertainment Weekly):

“The privilege of doing an anthology is you have that range. So you can do big space stories, and small indie stories … Jodie Foster’s directing one for us, which is wonderful, and it’s so different in tone and scale and story.”

We personally believe that a big part of the joy of watching Black Mirror comes in the sense of joy and wonderment that you get in watching episodes without having too much of it spoiled in advance.

On a slightly different subject pertaining to the show, fellow executive producer Charlie Brooker gave a little bit of commentary describing what it is like for him having negative, scary headlines constantly sent to him as possible inspiration for episodes:

“What happens more is I’m just immediately alerted to any horrible development in the world … People just email or flag or tweet me going, ‘This is quite Black Mirror-esque! Look at this horrible thing!’ So I can’t escape the world.”

Black Mirror episodes probably will continue to mirror real life in some interesting ways, but it won’t always be intentional. There have already been occasions in the past where real life has mirrored (word choice intentional) some episodes of the show, (remember “nose Dive” and it’s eerie similarity to that “peeple app”?) and we at CarterMatt ultimately do not see that changing.
