Grey’s Anatomy ratings tie Will & Grace; Chicago Fire, The Orville fall

Grey's Anatomy ratings

Some of the latest good news and bad news is in from Thursday night, and it’s certainly clear that the Grey’s Anatomy ratings are as strong as ever.

While the show technically dropped versus its most-recent episode to finish with a 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic, we also have a hard time envisioning that the folks over at ABC are all that upset over this. It tied a declining Will & Grace for #1 on the night (sports excluded) and it did rather well — especially when you consider just how poorly some of the other shows out there fared across the board.

Take, for example, The Orville falling down to a 0.9 rating, or Great News losing half of its lead-in before finishing with just a 1.0. Meanwhile, Scandal premiered fairly soft to just a 1.4. While that’s not terrible these days, this was a show that was getting over a 3.0 not all that long enough. We blame much of the fourth and fifth season for seeing some pretty steady declines.

Over on NBC Chicago Fire fell to a 1.2 rating, but we don’t classify that as all that terrible when you consider the aforementioned Great News lead-in and how this timeslot has fared in the past with some other shows on the network.

One of the real winners of the fall to date

It may not be discussed all that much, but how about The Good PlaceIts 1.2 rating last night isn’t something to do a victory dance over, but when you look at its year-to-year numbers so far they are rather impressive. The show is only down 3% right now in the demo versus its second season, and the season 1 ratings were heavily inflated by a special premiere that averaged a 2.3. This show has a lot to be proud of right now and we cite a ton of this to the ability of its writers to come up with a story that is so good that it will retain viewers. Never discount the ability of a quality show to keep most of its audience.

In an era where so many shows drop significantly ever year, there’s something to be said for viewers who are still excited enough in their programming that they want to watch something live.
