Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Odette Annable on playing Big Bad Reign

Reign is one of the most interesting characters entering Supergirl season 3 and for several different reasons. Odette Annable is one. The Breaking In alum has the chops to tackle the two roles that she’s assigned to play this year: The aforementioned Reign and also Samantha Arias. The two may technically inhabit the same body, but at the start of the season it won’t quite feel that way. She will be covered more in a mask of innocence, and also completely unaware of the darkness and the Worldkiller status that lies underneath the surface. This is something that will slowly reveal itself to her more as the story progresses.

So how does Annable describe her character at the start of her run? This is something that she describes more in her latest comments to Entertainment Weekly:

“Samantha is a single mother, she’s a hard worker, she’s very much a working mom in the sense that she’s trying to juggle it all, as one does, as I do in real life. She loves her daughter more than words can express. They have a really special bond. What I think is really special about this storyline is it’s a slow play and you’ll get to see this whole heartbreaking story unfold in a really — they’re taking their time with it, and we have the time to do it. I think the audience is really going to hopefully relate.”

What we at CarterMatt know is that as of episode 2 we’re going to be seeing her work at L Corp, and she is going to be making some close bonds and friendships with some of the other people among the core cast. The main reason that this is so important is that it’s going to make it all the more heartbreaking when there starts being some evidence of something sinister underneath the surface. When she gets closer to becoming more like Reign, the question there becomes if anyone is willing to see the truth; it may be easier to deny it or imagine that it couldn’t possibly be her who is causing problems. By the time they realize just how powerful this character is there is a reasonably good chance that it’s going to be too late. At that point, Reign may already be causing all sorts of chaos on National City.

One thing you should note is that it could be a while before her true form is revealed: At the time of the interview, Annable had not even seen her costume. (Another fun fact — she actually auditioned for the role of Alex Danvers back before the series began.)
