Gotham season 4 episode 3 spoilers: Who is Barbara’s ‘benefactor’?

Entering Gotham season 4 episode 3 it remains clear that Barbara Kean is one of the show’s more mysterious characters. While she’s alive, there remain many different questions surrounding how that happened and also what she’s really up to now. On the surface she is supposedly working now as an arms dealer, but she isn’t sharing much in the way of knowledge about what led her to this business, or who she is supposedly getting money from to kick it off.

One other thing that is very interesting is reflected in this new Gotham season 4 episode 3 sneak preview below — for a woman who is working so much in the gun trade, Barbara finds herself suddenly very interested in a knife. Oswald is getting set to hold an auction, and she wants to secure one of the prized items before it even hits the block. She’s willing to pay up to three times the starting price for it but even still, the Penguin isn’t quite budging. He’s calling her bluff, which makes sense given that Barbara’s told many a lie before and he may realize that there is so much more value here than Barbara is letting on.

Perhaps more than this, though, what is driving Oswald’s curiosity is the knowledge that Barbara seems to be working and operating for someone else rather than herself. As a result of that, he wants a whole lot more in the way of information on who this “benefactor” could be. He wants to know who she is buying on the behalf of — if she offers up some of that information, he was no problem at all letting her have what she so desires.

However, if she doesn’t give up any of that information we don’t foresee that Barbara is going to get anywhere near as lucky. This episode should be fun from the vantage point of watching these two butt heads — unfortunately for Barbara, it does seem like Oswald has the upper hand for now. He’s got the deeper Rolodex and even some of the GCPD working with him on the whole license program. Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne may not like it (and neither do we at CarterMatt), but in his mind those two guys are mere drops in a bucket. Plus, Penguin doesn’t quite realize as of yet just how big of a thorn in his side Bruce is going to become. Had he not underestimated him the irony here is that the entire story of Batman could’ve been squashed before it even began.
