Agents of SHIELD season 5 spoilers: Natalie Cordova-Buckley promoted

Natalia Cordova-Buckley

If you love Natalia Cordova-Buckley and her Agents of SHIELD role of Elena Rodriguez a.k.a. Yo-Yo, you’re probably going to love today’s news.

According to a report from Deadline, the actress is being promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season. It’s a promotion that’s been a long time coming, and we’ll be the first to admit that there were times during the fourth season where we just went ahead and assumed that she was a regular even when she wasn’t. She was a big part of that season and had some incredible scenes in there with Henry Simmons (Mack). This promotion is a nice commitment to her as a performer, since it symbolizes that there are plans for there to be another substantial role for her coming up in the near future.

In a statement talking more about the promotion, here is what executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell had to say about the move:

“Natalia is a powerhouse in her work and in her daily life, and she has imbued one of our favorite characters with her natural strength and humor …. Natalia was instantly a part of the S.H.I.E.L.D. family the first day she walked onto set, and we’re happy she’s now an official member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.”

New episodes of Agents of SHIELD have yet to even officially premiere — there’s not even a premiere date at the moment — but locking in Natalia now is still nice. What we know is that the show looks to be picking up close to where season 4 left off with Coulson (Clark Gregg) seemingly trapped in outer space. It remains to be seen where some of the other characters are or how much of the story will be located there. We do have a lot of faith in the writers coming off of their best season; what makes us worried more so than anything else is the timeslot Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s not as though this show was a ratings warrior on ABC Tuesdays for season 4, and the numbers could decline again no matter how good they make the story.

Would we be shocked if Agents of SHIELD announces at New York Comic-Con this weekend that this is the final season of the show? Not really, but we would actually like to see it continue for a little while longer still. At the very least it’d be nice to see the show test some of the waters on Friday, see how it performs, and then make some more of its future decisions with a little more of that knowledge in mind.

For now, what do you think about the Natalia Cordova-Buckley promotion?
