Once Upon a Time season 7 premiere: When Henry meets Roni (video)
At the moment, we’d say that there may not be any reunion that is more interesting than the one between Henry and Regina, otherwise known by her new alter ego Roni. It’s Henry alongside the woman who helped to raise him in Storybrooke, but the irony here is that neither one of them has any knowledge as to who the other one is. Henry’s daughter Lucy is the only person with any apparent knowledge of fairy-tales and secret truths, and much like with the first season of the show, other characters are going to figure things out as time goes by.
The big difference between where we are right now and where we were during the first season of the show comes via the history: During the first season everyone was new to us. Now, there are six seasons of history baked into Henry re-meeting Regina for the first time. We know how much the two cared about each other and there’s this heartbreaking element to the two meeting up without any knowledge of what they’ve been through. It’s also interesting to see Regina, once a woman who had unspeakable power in Storybrooke, working in the Seattle neighborhood of Hyperion Heights as a bartender. She doesn’t have any control; the only thing she can control are some of the conversations and drinks that she chooses to hand out.
As for how Henry and Roni meet up, that’s all due to a stolen laptop and Henry being advised to head over to her bar. This is all a part of the plan to re-familiarize Henry with this world, one that he has been distant from for some time. While he may still hold the position of Author, he has also lived a good part of his time in Seattle with a new profession: Ride-share driver. He’s basically operating the Once Upon a Time version of an Uber.
Is this all too close to season 1?
We foresee this being the question that many Once Upon a Time viewers have when they are watching the premiere. We know that for us the biggest thing we can speak to is that we loved the first season of the show, and in retrospect we were probably too hard on it. Mixing the procedural and serialized elements of the show made for the most cohesive, interesting storytelling. We got to know more characters and in turn the main narrative was restrained to where it wasn’t too repetitive or cumbersome. That is something that did happen in the years since, especially back during season 5 when the show embarked on that King Arthur storyline we’ve tried to forget about in the years since.
