Saturday Night Live video: Ryan Gosling – JAY-Z fun

Ryan Gosling - JAY-Z

The Ryan Gosling – JAY-Z episode of Saturday Night Live is coming in just over 24 hours, and we’ve got one more preview for it!

If you look below, you can see Gosling, coming on board to host for the second time, trying to have a little bit of fun with the musical guest for the night. Is JAY-Z really biting on any of that? Well, not really … but we feel like that’s meant to be a part of the joke. The most Ryan can get out of him is JAY-Z admitting that he “remembers” seeing him at Coachella. Hey, that’s at least something right?

We should probably go ahead and warn you that if you’re expecting a JAY-Z make an appearance during the SNL premiere in a sketch, you’re probably going to be disappointed. While we’ve noted at CarterMatt in the past that there are some great sketches out there featuring musical guests (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Justin Timberlake have all done them in episodes where they served in this capacity), the majority of musical guests just stick to their part of the show. It’s really with this said that it would be all sorts of amazing if JAY-Z actually does buck our expectations.

What are our expectations for this episode? Well, much of that begins of course with Donald Trump, given that the NBC show has weeks worth of Trump material to mine from with Alec Baldwin. (He previously played his version of the character during one Weekend Update Summer Edition show.) The big challenge for Baldwin as Trump moving into the new season is him trying to find a way to make it interesting and relevant at a time in which some of the instant gratification is starting to fade a little bit. At this point last year nobody had any idea how funny Alec was going to be as the President, and now everyone does and he doesn’t have Hillary Clinton as a foil anymore. SNL doesn’t even have Steve Bannon or Sean Spicer to play around with. The Presidential cabinet, other than an occasional moment from Sarah Huckabee Sanders (played by Aidy Bryant), has actually become a little boring. You can probably make fun of the Tom Price scandal from today, but there’s not really all that much you can do to mock him as a character. He’s more of a Weekend Update joke than someone who can probably exist on his own.
