Arrow season 6: Stephen Amell wants Colin Donnell return

Colin Donnel return

In what should be fairly unsurprising news to many Arrow fans out there, Stephen Amell wants Colin Donnell back on the series. Why in the world would he not want to have him back? Tommy Merlyn was the heart and soul of the first season, and he and Laurel were the vessels for how we got to know Oliver Queen the person, the guy separate from who was then called the Arrow. There was the party-boy that they remembered, and then the vigilante who he was in the present. They were very different people, but both integral to the series.

Unfortunately, the death of Tommy made it hard to bring Donnell back. Also, the same goes for him being a part of Chicago Med. This series has long seasons, and it films in a different location. That makes any sort of return appearance challenging.

Nonetheless, this weekend Stephen Amell made an appearance at Salt Lake City Comic-Con for a panel moderated by his wife Cassandra Jean, and speaking per Green Arrow TV, he responded to a question of who he’d like back with the following:

“For me, it’s always Tommy Merlyn … It’s always great to see him. We’ve forged a really great friendship and have been lucky enough to stay in touch, whether he’s making a trip back in Vancouver, or I’m filming in New York. When I was filming Turtles in New York, we went to him and Patti [Murin]’s wedding.”

Murin was also recently a part of Chicago Med, but she has moved on to the stage in order to take part in the new Frozen musical.

Do we think a Colin Donnell return is possible in Arrow season 6?

We actually do, primarily because of the fact that Chicago Med could have a shorter run for season 3. Therefore, maybe it’s possible that the series wraps before Arrow and he comes over and does a guest spot. It’s still hard to fathom him having a huge arc as a villain — remember the rumors that he could be Prometheus? — but getting to see him in flashbacks, a dream sequence, or even on Earth-2 could prove fun. We would like to see what alternate versions of Tommy and Laurel were like, whether it be Earth-2 Black Siren or someone else.

With other shows, maybe we at CarterMatt would just shrug our shoulders at all of this and say that it’s not that big of a deal. However, in the case of Arrow and the entire CW universe anything is possible given that the likes of Sara Lance, Damien Darhk, Eobard Thawne, Ronnie Raymond, Caitlin Show, Captain Cold, and many other characters resurface many times over, even after they were technically killed off for the first time.
