Ray Donovan season 5 episode 8 spoilers: New York mission; Abby’s choice

Ray Donovan season 5 episode 8

When Ray Donovan season 5 episode 8 airs on Showtime in just seven days, big choices will be at the center of the action. It doesn’t quite matter what time period you are talking about, either.

In the past, what we know is that we’re unfortunately getting near the end of the road for Abby. What makes this story so interesting is knowing the end result of it and seeing the emotional unraveling of the title character in the process. For two seasons we saw Ray’s marriage as one of hot-and-cold passion, and rarely did we ever see the subtlety or the caring. This season has changed that, as it’s dived into a more personal, powerful story that’s arguably given Paula Malcomson the best material of her entire career. It is always ironic how that works — she now has an opportunity to give some of her best performances ever, but it unfortunately comes at a time in which the character already has one figurative foot out the door. There is no way for Abby to survive this, and at the end of the flashbacks the presumption is that Malcomson is gone from the show.

Meanwhile, the synopsis below indicates just how Ray is going to keep himself involved in the present while we see the story jump through the two different time periods.

Ray Donovan season 5 episode 8 synopsis – “A last-ditch medical trial sends Ray on a dark mission in New York. Alone in LA, Abby turns to Terry and Bridget to help her make the toughest decision of her life.”

One of the questions that we can envision many Ray Donovan fans asking is if focusing on the two time periods is turning out to be either a net positive or negative in the progression of this story; honestly, we do see it both ways. We haven’t had the time to spend with Sam Winslow or some of the other characters as we have some other recurring people on the show in the past; yet, simultaneously we do think that these characters have made the most of some of their appearances, and hope that this does continue to be the case for the remainder of the season. It’s condensed the story a little bit more, and we do think it’s better to be left wanting more than feeling stuck watching something that is being played out much longer than it needs to be. We’ll save our final verdict at CarterMatt until the end of the season.
