The Last Ship season 5 not necessarily final season, TNT confirms
Earlier this week, there was a minor panic that struck out over an Instagram post from star Travis Van Winkle suggesting that the upcoming fifth season was going to be the last one. Now, TNT is refuting that idea in a new statement (per TVLine):
“We shot two seasons simultaneously; the fourth is currently on the air and the fifth will return next summer … We greenlit the fifth with the idea that it could be the final season, however it’s far too early to make that determination.”
As of right now, we do think that it’s certainly possible that season 5 could be the end, given that season 4 ratings are down considerably so far; we don’t think the network did the show any favors by scheduling it when they did, but that’s not something that we can complain all that much about given that they scheduled it when they scheduled it. We just have to live now with the ramifications of what that is. We should also note that when we interviewed Jocko Sims earlier this year, he said that he’d be more than happy to continue the show beyond the fifth season. It’s better at the moment to take somewhat of a wait-and-see approach.
Now that we’ve said all of that…
It probably does do The Last Ship some favors that they write the end of season 5 thinking that it could be the end of the road for the show, given that they do not want to necessarily put themselves in a position where they end up ending the show on a cliffhanger. It’s ultimately better to tie things up in a way that is appropriate, and then challenge yourself to create some sort of new story in the event that you learn later that there is going to be another season coming up down the road.
For the record, there are still many different stories still worth enjoying on The Last Ship season 4, and there is an all-new episode coming up on Sunday night. Our suggestion is that if you love the show, keep watching live and we’ll see what happens with the ratings down the line. Given all of the twists that happen within this show, it really wouldn’t be all that shocking to learn that the ratings go up and the show has a chance to turn around its fate.
