Ratings: America’s Got Talent finale helps The Good Place; Big Brother, MasterChef, rise
Overall, the America’s Got Talent finale led the way with a truly massive 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This was the top-rated finale of the show in the past several years, and it cements even more that this show is almost unstoppable at this point when it comes to its overall impact on pop culture. It’s incredibly dominant, and we really don’t see that changing at any point in the near future given that the show has the most unique talent out there and is also, time and time again, seen as a really great venue for fun.
In terms of the other finales that came on the air Wednesday night, the end of Big Brother 19 led to the show posting in total a 2.2 rating, a very strong win for what ended up being one of the show’s best finales — even though much of the season was a pretty slow, predictable trek to the finish line. Having Josh Martinez win in the end is probably one of the better things that could’ve happened, both in terms of the outcome this season and for the series as a whole. The MasterChef finale mustered a 1.1, which is about where the series has stood for most of the season. While this show was at one point a ratings titan, we’ve seen it over time start to lose a little bit more of its ratings momentum. It feels like the main thing to blame for this is the show simply sticking to an established format. Sooner or later, there will be a negative impact of that.
Oh, and we also should point out that the Salvation finale notched a 0.6 rating — while it may not be enough to grant the show a second season, it at least gave it a chance to go out on a higher note. CBS will likely make a firm decision one way or another on its future by the time we make it to the end of the fall.
The Good Place season 2 starts solid
As for the sole premiere of last night’s lineup, The Good Place got off to a pretty good start with a 1.4 rating. We know that NBC would love the show to fork over some better ratings during the second season; here’s to hoping many of the people who saw this show last night actually stick around for the long haul!
