Call the Midwife star Helen George pregnant! She, co-star Jack Ashton reveal news

Helen GeorgeMrs. Carter: There’s some great news in the Call the Midwife family, and it’s coming courtesy of series star Helen George!

While at the TV Choice Awards Monday evening in the UK, George confirmed alongside her partner / co-star Jack Ashton (who plays Tom on the BBC series) that she is expecting a child. This is a rather fun way to make such a  big reveal, and it had to be a celebratory occasion for the two of them! They get to celebrate this chapter in their lives, plus celebrate the show that brought them together.

Of course, anytime there is a real-life pregnancy in the Call the Midwife world it’s all the more exciting. This is a show all about pregnancy and celebrating motherhood, and helping mothers who are in the process of figuring out their lives after welcoming their children into the world. As Trixie Franklin, we’ve seen Helen George take on the part of caretaker for a number of powerful, wonderful stories. This should serve as an opportunity for her to be able to relate to some of these characters on the show more than ever before. She’ll go from playing a midwife to welcoming a child of her own.

As for whether or not the series decides to write in George’s pregnancy for the upcoming season, nothing has been reported on that subject just yet. That’s not much of a surprise, given that this series tends to be very tight-lipped about storylines, (other than castings) over the course of its production cycle. We do know that Trixie found a new love interest in season 6 in the dentist Christopher; Ashton’s Tom was a previous love interest of hers, but he went on to marry Barbara (Charlotte Ritchie) during the sixth season of the show. No matter what the show does with Trixie, we imagine that it will be powerful and heartfelt — basically, right within the wheelhouse of the series. This is a show that likes to strip characters to their core, and allow you to identify with everyone as people regardless of their social status, their income, or their political or religious beliefs. It’s total tissue TV in that you need a giant box of them anytime that you dive into this world.

New episodes of Call the Midwife formally begin with a Christmas Special later this year. Beyond that, there will be some new episodes airing on the BBC in January (most likely), followed by a debut in the spring on PBS here in America. (More details will be available here at CarterMatt later in the year).

For now, congratulations once more to Ashton and George! This is such an exciting period in their lives, and we couldn’t be more happy for them.
