True Detective season 3 details (finally) released by HBO

There is no more reason to wonder if True Detective season 3 is going to be happening — it’s now official. HBO is bringing their long-running franchise back for another go, and will be premiering it presumably within the next couple of years. Mahershala Ali of Moonlight is still poised to be the series’ star, and the official logline below gives you a tease of what you can expect:

“The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Ali’s role is going to be that of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. The timing of this location is interesting given that we just had the release of a Netflix series in Ozark featuring Jason Bateman; who knew that this location would suddenly be this popular?

The new season of True Detective has a lot of challenges just in terms of matching the hype of the first season, let alone some of the hype of some exceptional crime dramas like Fargo and The Night Of. One of the show’s challenges is that when the first season premiered, it was revolutionary; now, there is more top-tier crime programming elsewhere, so that makes then competition so much more impressive. True Detective needs to up its game, and we like the idea of having a central character if it stays that way. Ali is an incredible performer, and even before Moonlight we were a big supporter of his work dating all that way back to The 4400 on USA.

Show creator Nic Pizzolatto is responsible for writing the vast majority of the episodes, but will be co-credited alongside Deadwood guru David Milch for the fourth episode of the show. Milch was brought in to help further shore up the story and make it as great as humanly possible. Pizzolatto will direct some episodes of the third season alongside series newcomer Jeremy Saulnier. It’s still somewhat of a shame to us personally that Nic and Cary Fukunaga aren’t collaborating these days, given that the two seemingly brought the best out of each other creatively.

In a statement, Pizzolatto had the following to say:

“I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy … I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”

True Detective season 3 is going to premiere most likely in 2019, given how long it takes to cast the show and make sure everything is together and beautiful. We would figure, at present, that the show will premiere in the weeks following the final Game of Thrones season, which is premiering either in late 2018 or early the following year. (This is just an estimation, though, and it is obviously still subject to change.)
