Is a Preacher season 3 renewal coming soon? There are signs
According to a report from New Orleans Television (thanks to the fine folks from SpoilerTV for the find), AMC has filed some early paperwork to film the third season of the show in and around the Louisiana city. Pre-production for the show would begin this November, with filming itself kicking off early next year. This is of course provided that the show is actually renewed for more episodes, but that feels like a given, especially with this paperwork filed.
So far, Preacher has been one of AMC’s signature shows — it’s inventive, crazy, dramatic, and overall a rollicking good time. The one point of concern is that there was a pretty substantial ratings drop from the first season to this one. Season 2 is averaging in total a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down around 34% from where season 1 was as a whole. Are there some caveats to throw in here? Absolutely, with one of the biggest ones being the simple fact that season 1 aired on a more lucrative night in Sunday, and started off with a lot more promotion and a strong lead-in. This season’s had to fend more for itself, but it is still the beneficiary of some strong DVR ratings and a devoted following who watches the show and reads some of the source material.
Even with a lower rating, for the time being there is no reason to think that the show is going anywhere in the near future. We absolutely expect to see more Preacher on the air in 2018 and beyond, provided of course that the cast and creative team remain interested in doing more. Everyone still seems to be having a pretty good time for now, and that gives us hope for the future.
How long could we wait for a renewal?
Probably not long, given that there are only two more episodes to go this season. We don’t think AMC is going to want to air the finale without there being any sort of concern that the show is not coming back. They’ll likely make an announcement in the days leading up to that episode, while offering up some teases in various postmortem interviews regarding what could be coming up next.
Preacher is a part of AMC’s strong overall lineup of outside-the-box shows, one that includes the likes of The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Into the Badlands, and Better Call Saul. We can’t imagine the network wanting to do anything without it for quite a while still.
