Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Floriana Lima’s Maggie not being killed off

Floriana Lima's Maggie

While it does appear as though Floriana Lima’s Maggie won’t be a permanent part of Supergirl season 3, she’s not getting killed, either. This is where we all breathe a collective sigh of relief.

From the moment that it was announced that Lima would not be a series regular on the upcoming batch of episodes, we feel like this fear probably popped up here and there in the brains of most fans — and for good reason. There is that history of LGBTQIA characters being killed off on scripted television series, and given that the writers had to find a way to reduce her screen time a la Lexa on The 100, this is always a convenient route to go — it explains the character’s absence, while not making you hate them for not being around the people that they love.

While there are some questions still about Maggie’s future on the show, we do know this: She’s not going to be killed off. This is something that executive producer Andrew Kreisberg touched on more while speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently:

“Maggie does not die … I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that. Maggie will continue to exist in the world and we hope that if the opportunity presents itself for her, that she’ll come back from time to time.”

What is also nice about some of Kreisberg’s comments here is that he also discusses just how long we’re going to potentially see Maggie within the opening of the season:

“Unfortunately, Floriana decided to move on, which left us with, how do we write her out as a regular while still honoring these two women who were deeply in love with each other? Taking a page out of some of our own personal dating history, we’ve come up with a story that we really feel like honors what’s come before them, and honors how much they love each other, how much they mean to each other, and how much they’ve changed each other’s lives. It’s some of the most emotional stuff we’ve ever done, and Floriana has been so good in these first five episodes. Episode 3 is all about Maggie and her dad, played by Carlos Bernard, and it’s some of the most heartbreaking stuff I’ve ever done on anything I’ve ever done.”

It’s possible that you could not see Maggie for a while after these first five episodes, but we absolutely do hope that in due time she does come back. Our feeling is that Supergirl is looking to deliver a story here that makes some sense for these characters while not reducing the love that Maggie/Alex have for each other. We do think that there is a way for the writers to have their cake and eat it too.
