For everyone out there wondering, it appears as though Tyler Hoechlin and Dylan O’Brien will officially be a part of the Teen Wolf series finale!
This news was confirmed by showrunner Jeff Davis in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, one where he goes through his satisfaction with having Derek and Stiles back — while also explaining the difficulties that do inevitably come with how many people all returning to the show at roughly the same time:
“There were so many characters to wrap up. It was incredibly difficult [to write].”
To help compensate for that, MTV tried to do a good thing for Davis and the rest of the cast and crew, giving the finale an extended run time. However, that’s only going to go so far when it comes to comes to how much story that there could be left to tell. You now only have to establish endgames for many of the characters, but also set up something that suggests what could be coming after the fact.
Davis goes on in the interview to discuss in greater detail some of what the ending of the show is going to feel like:
“It’s definitely not a cut-to-black [ending] like The Sopranos. We tried to craft an ending that feels right for the audience and for the characters.”
We do feel for any showrunner who is doing their part to figure out the right way for their story to end, mostly because series finales are, by and large, some of the most-criticized episodes of anything out there. Every viewer anticipates that the show is going to find a way to craft something that effectively suits his or her narrative, and there are only so many occasions in which this can actually happen. Most of the time, the finale’s going to do something that you as a viewer don’t like. You have to focus mostly on the positive, and do your part to ignore the fact that there are some polarizing elements here and there.
Also, remember to enjoy the entire journey! One of the things that we do often tell people who get annoyed about the end of shows like How I Met Your Mother is that the entire path before the finale made it worthwhile, even if the show didn’t stick to landing. (Now that we’ve said that, we do hope that the Teen Wolf series finale does find a way to have a stronger overall ending than what we saw on that CBS comedy.)
