Should The Sinner season 2 be considered, despite ‘event series’ label?

The Sinner season 2

Could USA Network be looking at some tough decisions when it comes to a potential The Sinner season 2? We’re starting to wonder based on the limited series’ success on the air.

Wednesday night’s new episode of the series starring Jessica Biel continued to showcase some impressive ratings, drawing in total a 0.5 rating (tying its series high) and posting its best total in 1.76 million viewers that we’ve seen yet. These ratings are without even considering such things as live+3 or live+7 data, which could of course push the ratings to a better, stronger place than we’ve seen them to date. That’s very much worth noting given that there are so many people these days who do opt to watch shows on DVR more so than they do live.

The biggest problem that comes with considering another iteration of The Sinner is that you can’t do the same story again. This was billed as a limited series for a reason, and it has to do with it having a defined beginning, middle, and end. That’s also why you were probably able to get such a great cast here, and why viewer interest is so strong. We’re in an impatient culture now, and it’s easier for everyone to get a little bit more committed to the journey of a show when you’re able to just kick back, relax, and enjoy eight episodes without thinking that there’s more of the show that you’re going to end up watching at some point down the line in the future.

One thing that USA could easily do with The Sinner is to simply find a way to go the True Detective route and order a second season that is a completely different story with different characters. Maybe you keep some of the actors, but find new roles for them that allow them a chance to flex some different dramatic muscles. You can’t really continue the story in the same way, but you can shake things up and find some other unique ways to make it work.

There is certainly not going to be any hurry, one way or another, to figure out what the future of The Sinner could be. One of the biggest things to remember here is that we’re only at the halfway point of the show’s run this time, and that allows USA a little more time in order to analyze the performance of the show and better see a little bit more of what the future is going to hold for it. Worst-case scenario, they may just look at this as inspiration to create some other shows in a fairly similar genre in the future.
