Power season 4: Show boss on shocking Raina St. Patrick decision

Raina St. Patrick

As we look towards the Power season 4 finale, there is a prevailing sense of dread — after all, there has to be given what’s transpired. This past episode featured arguably the most shocking moment in the entire series, as we saw Raina St. Patrick, Ghost’s only daughter, murdered as a consequence of some of her brother Tariq’s actions. Of course, you can trace that back even more to some of what James has done in the past. Had he been more present, more aware, and more caring, it is easy to craft the argument that such a thing would have never transpired. She could still be alive, and if he’d been more attentive arguably the entire landscape of the show and story for some of these characters would be incredibly different.

So what was the decision-making that went into having this character death happen right now? This is something that executive producer Courtney A. Kemp described further in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“We wanted it to be about, the sins of the father that are visited upon the son and the daughter are really his neglect as a parent. Ghost’s self-involvement and his eye being elsewhere made him vulnerable to arrest and incarceration, and distracted from the family. And while all that was happening, Tariq was getting further and further into a life of crime. We wanted this story to really be about Tariq and, as a result, it’s about his rebellion against his father. So it’s about Ghost in one way, but in a lot of other ways it’s actually really about, “Are criminals born or are they made?” Nature versus nurture. We always said that Raina is a truly good character and, you know on Power, if you’re a good guy, you die. Whether you’re Shawn (Sinqua Walls), Greg (Andy Bean), Julio (J.R. Ramirez), if you’re a good guy, you’re probably going to get it on our show.”

Now, Ghost and Tommy have to figure out how to get vengeance for what happened, and that includes going after Ray Ray and being as driven and proactive as possible. The problem here is that it’s not like when Tariq was captured. There is no fixing this. Raina is gone, the product of murder, and there is no way to bring her back. The fact that she died trying to protect her brother, who was not always there to protect and care for her near the end of her life, is an additional testament to the sort of tragedy that’s been crafted here.

The entire foundation of this show has been rocked to its core; now, we’re left to wonder more of what’s going to happen moving into the finale. It’s going to be emotional, so it’s best to just prepare for that right now.
