What are the Zoo season 4 renewal odds at present?

Zoo season 4 renewal

We’re still weeks out from the finale, but doesn’t now seem like the right time to start discussing the Zoo season 4 renewal odds?

At the moment, it’s a little too early to have confidence one way or another. So far in the fourth season, what we’re seeing is the show averaging in total a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic to go along with around 2.76 million viewers. Are these good numbers? If the show was airing on cable, we’d say that for sure. Unfortunately, it’s a scripted show airing on network TV, and on most weeks it’s not even the most popular show that we end up seeing on Thursday nights in its timeslot. (It often finds itself lagging behind The Night Shift over on NBC.) It’s ratings are down fairly substantial year-to-year, and you also have to remember that making this show is probably not all that cheap. There is a lot of CGI that used to create all of the animals (last week we had a really cool 60 foot snake!), and a rather large cast to go along with it.

Now, let’s look at some of the silver lining. For one Zoo is a show that has a tremendous streaming deal with Netflix. There are new episodes that come on the service not too long at all after the air on CBS, and the show gets a good bit of money from that. This also gives Netflix viewers who have never seen the show on CBS a chance to watch the series from the beginning and watch live if there is a season 4 to bring up next season’s numbers. It does also have the fact that CBS doesn’t have a lot else when it comes to summer programming, and there’s also solid DVR ratings and a devoted following who would likely be rather vocal if you were to cancel the show.

While we cannot speak to whether or not there is going to be any unanswered questions left at the end of this season just yet, we do know this: If producers do throw that out there, we do believe that there’s a reasonably good chance people would freak if the show gets canceled and start rallying to bring it back.

What should CBS do?

If we were at the network, here’d be our thought process: Bring Zoo back for a final season, and maybe even shorten it if you have to. Obviously the ratings aren’t great anymore, and we recognize that the show may have a short lifespan given the finicky nature of summer viewers. Hopefully, CBS just doesn’t leave anyone hanging for too long on this renewal/no renewal news, since the last thing that we want to see is some incredibly long waiting game after the finale only to get a quiet cancellation after the fact.

In the end, CBS should renew Zoo just for the sake of wrapping it up. Unfortunately, it’s too early to say whether or not they will.
