Lucifer season 3 spoilers: Tom Ellis on threat via Tom Welling’s character

Tom Ellis

Is there trouble for Lucifer and Chloe moving into Lucifer season 3? Tom Ellis seems to be suggesting so, all courtesy of Tom Welling. The Smallville alum is joining the Fox series in a major role for the upcoming third season, and his Marcus Pierce is poised to be a significant romantic rival to Lucifer thanks to the connection he has with Chloe.

As you would imagine, Lucifer is not going to be thrilled by this news — and he also doesn’t know precisely what he is going to do with himself. Speaking on that subject to TV Guide, Ellis had the following to say:

“It’s strange because Lucifer is not used to having any sort of competition, certainly on the sexual front. So I think he’s been very safe in the knowledge that he and the detective have a very special connection … Obviously, when someone comes into the fold and makes [Chloe] look in a different direction, one can only imagine how that affects Lucifer and his envy and jealousy and all the other bad things that he’s made up of.”

Basically, this is going to be a heck of a lot of fun to see Lucifer jealous and how he reacts to having someone new around who he perceives to be a threat. We do wonder if this is the sort of thing that would make him open up and bear a little bit more of his soul. After all, if he realizes that nothing else is working when it comes to winning her over at the moment, he’ll have to raise the stakes and up his game. It’s basic human nature in that way.

We’re of course rooting for Lucifer and Chloe to make it through, being that they are the ultimate odd couple and this is the relationship that we have become invested in over time. However, we’re also simultaneously very much aware of the fact that Lucifer has some work to do in order to have a relationship with her that actually works. He may be used to having things be superficial and also come to him rather easy, but the truest rewards in life are often the ones that come as a result of tremendous effort. He best be prepared for that.
