Teen Wolf season 6 spoilers: How is Tyler Hoechlin back as Derek Hale?

Tyler Hoechlin

While there were many exciting moments within the Teen Wolf season 6 premiere on Sunday night, the return of Tyler Hoechlin tops the list. Derek Hale is back around! He’s a beloved character, so getting him back at the center of the series is exciting.

Yet, there are some other implications that are coming with having Derek back around as a major part of the story, and one of the biggest ones is that he’s not coming back via traditional means. He is being targeted by Stiles’ team at the FBI as a serial killer for whatever reason, and seeing how that plays out should prove rather interesting.

Yet, you’re probably going to need to exercise some patience before you actually see Tyler in action again. As showrunner Jeff Davis tells TV Guide, this is a storyline that will take a few episodes to play out, but this appearance by Hoechlin is meant to be so much more than just a one-and-done guest spot:

“It is not a cameo. He comes back. He’s got great scenes with JR Bourne, some good fighting stuff. It was really great to have Tyler Hoechin back on set. He was so enthusiastic to get back to the role and to please the fans with the return.”

The other great thing about the way that this story is currently constructed is that this also will give some reasons for Stiles to return down the road in these final episodes, as well. The way that the story is constructed at present has been to provide Stiles with a little bit of closure, which makes some sense given Dylan O’Brien’s limited availability in these final episodes. The focus now is going to be more on Scott and the remainder of the pack as they find more of their own closure. (The absence of O’Brien’s name from the opening credits should be a pretty strong bit of evidence as to how much things have changed with the show.)

Hoechlin is far from the only returning Teen Wolf star for the final season, as it’s been confirmed already that you are going to see both Colton Haynes and also Charlie Carver in some capacity moving forward. Alas, there isn’t much hope of seeing either Crystal Reed or Arden Cho in the final episodes, and that does bum us out tremendously given that they were each at one point a big part of the season. (You can read a little more of our take on this by heading over to this link.)
