American Horror Story season 7 spoilers: Lena Dunham signs up

Lena DunhamWell, go ahead and consider this the biggest American Horror Story surprise that we have: Lena Dunham is now on board.

In a new post on Twitter, show co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that the former Girls star will be appearing on the new season — it’s one of those things that we really shouldn’t be surprised about but still are. Dunham and Murphy are friends in real life, and Ryan often works with either friends or people he admires. Girls ended earlier this year, and this marks a chance for her to do a project where she can focus more on acting and not on directing, writing, or some of the other responsibilities that she’s had in the past.

There aren’t any more details about her role at the moment, but given that Dunham is a polarizing figure we’re sure that there will be plenty of opinions about her that come out in the comments and on Twitter. Personally, we try to be fairly insular with the shows that we watch — if the role she plays works for the show and she does a good job with it, it’s not going to impact whether or not we want to watch. Unfortunately, it’s probably going to be many weeks before we know precisely what this said role is, given the frequency in which the franchise tends to keep things locked up when it comes to roles leading up to a season.

One of the things that is immediately among the most interesting things about this upcoming season comes via its guest, given that we’ve got the likes of Billie Lourd, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, and many more. There were rumors floating around out there about both Lady Gaga and Vera Farmiga being a part of the show this time around, but they turned out to be untrue. This season is themed around the Presidential Election, and there is some irony in Dunham being a part give that she was one of the most outspoken celebrities at the time the election took place. To be fair, though, it’s not exactly like there weren’t many people out there devoid of opinions on what happened this past fall.

The new season of American Horror Story will premiere over the fall, and hopefully there will be some more news to announce soon. What we do know, per Murphy’s own recent comments, is that the official title reveal for the show is going to be coming in the days ahead.
