Shooter season 2 star Ryan Phillippe breaks leg; to impact production

Ryan Phillippe

For everyone excited to see Shooter season 2, have no fear — the premiere on Tuesday will still happen as planned. However, there is some unfortunate news floating around out there for its star in Ryan Phillippe.

In a series of tweets, the actor confirmed that he badly broke his leg over the weekend — luckily, he will be fine, but the show is actually still in production and this could mean some last-second changes to the story:

“I didn’t injure myself doing a stunt or anywhere near the set of Shooter … I was the victim of a freak accident during a family outing on Sunday. My leg is badly broken & required surgical attention, but I will make a full recovery, am in good hands, and will be back in action soon.”

Phillippe is vowing to do everything that he can in order to promote the show from his hospital bed, whether that be tweeting about the episodes live or answering fan questions. Basically, this is a guy still very much interested in giving back to his fans, and supporting a show that means quite a bit to him. Shooter became a bit of an under-the-radar hit during the first season, and we’re very much intrigued in seeing what happens with it now in season 2 with new threats out there for Bob Lee to face.

In a statement per Deadline, Paramount (who produces the show alongside Universal Cable Productions) had the following to say:

“We are working with our partners at USA and UCP to adjust the production schedule, but first and foremost we are happy to hear that Ryan is doing well and recovering.”

Phillippe’s health is obviously the most important thing to note here — Shooter is just a TV show, and it’s important to keep everything in perspective. The aforementioned site does note that production was working on the ninth episode at the time of this injury, and there will be some retooling. For the time being, it does still look as though filming will be done in time for the show to be turned around without a problem by the necessary air dates.

Interestingly, this is the second straight season Shooter had to deal with some unusual circumstances. Last year, the show was delayed months after a series of gun-related tragedies. There is no real equating what happened this time and last year in terms of magnitude, however.

For the rest of the season, our plans are to give you a fairly steady stream of coverage pertaining to Shooter, whether it be reviews or previews for some upcoming episodes. For now, the one story that we have for you is over at this link, which is where you can get both a recap of the first season and a look at what’s going to be coming up next. (Photo: USA.)
