Will a Degrassi: Next Class season 5 happen on Netflix?
At the moment, the one big piece of news that we has is this: Signs point towards the show getting more, just because Degrassi is an institution. It hasn’t been a major part of the Netflix library for very long as an original property, but this is a franchise that spawns generations and has cultivated so many great careers, whether it be a Nina Dobrev or a Drake.
The one thing that you do have to remember here is that Degrassi is a show that is cyclical in nature, and it’s more about the institution than it is any one character. Therefore, when some characters potentially graduate this season, there will be new cast members who come in and have their stories begin. High school is a very specific time in everyone’s life, and it’s certainly a time that everyone can relate to. With that in mind, we don’t expect that every audience member is going to love every character — you pick your favorites and often watch for them. The challenge for this show is continuing to appeal to the current generation of teenagers and young adults. There are some fans who continue watching through the years, but there are some who watch for their era, and then move on to other things.
What we tend to do when looking at Degrassi is think of it almost as a combination of Saturday Night Live and a daytime soap: It has some elements of both when it comes to its casting, its stories, and the fact that it could technically last however long that viewers stick around. We certainly hope that it won’t be going anywhere soon.
When we know the show’s future?
Probably within the next couple of months. If Netflix wants to get a new batch of episodes together for the new year, it’s really not something that they can wait around on for a long period of time. There’s gotta be time in order to prepare the scripts, film, and get a batch of episodes together in time. Because of the Netflix release model, they need to have episodes together earlier and film earlier than most other broadcast / network shows. For now, there’s no reason to think that it won’t come back, so just take a look at the new batch of episodes and don’t stress too much about it. Hopefully, there’ll be a sense of closure for many of you upon watching it just in case that some of your favorites don’t come back.
