Cable ratings: Dark Matter season 3, Killjoys, and Wynonna Earp

Were Syfy shows like Dark Matter, Killjoysand Wynonna Earp hurt by the Fourth of July holiday weekend starting up? That was something we were curious to find out in looking at the ratings, which were just released after a little bit of a delay.

In two cases, we’ve actually got some good news to report! Since we like making people happy, let’s start with some of that before drifting over to the bad. (Caveat: Remember that these are only live+same day numbers, and that there are some fluctuations that will understandably happen when DVR viewership and streams are factored in after the fact.)

Dark Matter – For last week’s episode (read our full review for it now over here), Dark Matter proved further that it is one of the most consistent shows of its kind on TV. It kept steady with the 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic that it’s held firm to throughout the entirety of season 3, and in terms of total viewers, it turned in its second-best outing of the season with almost 620,000 viewers checking out the show.

Another good sign for the show’s likely season 4 renewal: Viewership year-to-year is down less than 10% in the demo versus the most-recent season. Given that most shows these days are falling 10-20%, Syfy has to be really happy with that.

Wynonna Earp – Meanwhile, Friday night’s episode (which had a pretty shocking Wynonna / Waverly moment at the center of it) actually set a new season high in viewers! There were around 580,000 viewers, which means it almost had an equal audience to Dark Matter. Meanwhile, it stayed at around the same 0.1 rating that it’s had for the majority of season 2, and it is also down less than 10% year-to-year. We’re hopeful for its future, though of course we’re well-aware that Syfy is not always the most patient show in the world when it comes to determining whether or not to keep shows around.

Killjoys – All right, let’s go ahead and get to the bad news. The show drew around 550,000 viewers for the season 3 premiere, which was down over 200,000 from the show’s season 2 premiere viewership. While technically the premiere drew the same 0.2 demo rating that it did for that episode, it’s a little deceptive — when you don’t round the numbers to the nearest tenth, it was down pretty considerably.

For now, we’re willing to just say that this was a factor of both the holiday weekend and that there may have been some viewers out there who were not altogether aware that the show had come back on the air just yet. Hopefully, there’ll be a bit of a bounce-back next week and the show can get itself in the same territory as the other two Syfy shows that aired on the night. We do think that this is a great lineup, and as a result of that we’d like to see it stick around for as long as possible.
