Longmire season 6: Farewell to Robert Taylor, Katee Sackhoff, and filming

Robert Taylor

Longmire season 6 is riding off into the sunset, at least from a production angle. It’s done. Robert Taylor and Katee Sackhoff are done filming after six-plus years of memories.

For any longtime fan, this is going to be a difficult feeling to process. Saturday was dropping the curtain, and this is a show that we’ve lived with, anticipated in some way for over half a decade. That’s no small period in any person’s life. It’s transformative. This is a show that may have inspired many to enjoy the simpler things in life: Nature, family, and friends. It may have also opened their ideas to the modern-day plight of Native Americans, and the issues they face with the current legal system.

You can see below some of the final photos of filming from various social-media sources, whether it be Taylor’s Instagram, Katee’s Twitter, or a particularly powerful post from A Martinez that speaks to one of the show’s simple messages: “The family you choose.” While Walt may have daughter Cady, that is not the only person he looks to. He has The Ferg, Vic, Henry Standing Bear, Ruby, and the other characters who inhabit his world and make him feel whole. It makes sense for the final episodes of the series to go small, and focus on these subjects as these characters move forward in life. (Martinez notes that one of the final sequences shot is not necessarily the final sequence to air on the show — it is fairly commonplace for events to be filmed somewhat out of order.)

Longmire is a show of beauty, and we expect these final episodes to touch on that in between sweeping aesthetics, powerful messages, and reflections for characters looking towards their next phase of life and what it could hold. Let’s for now continue to thank Taylor, Sackhoff, Martinez, and more for their years of hard work and care bringing these beloved Craig Johnson characters to life. These stories began in the books, and while the show and the books may be separate universes, it’s in the books that they will live on.

Now, the wait begins for new episodes

Following the end of filming, what comes next is a lengthy post-production process of editing the episodes, getting the some perfected, and any additional ADR work that needs to be done with the cast. Technically, none of the actors may be completely done with the show just yet, even if they are done filming it in New Mexico.

Beyond that, we get to the point where we wait for Netflix to announce the premiere date, which will be this fall and most likely either in September or October. It’s a different procedure for the streaming service that it is anywhere else, given that they need all of the episodes done at one time. That’s certainly a difference from broadcast, where they can just get the episodes ready on a weekly basis.

While you wait, check out some further coverage

Earlier this long weekend, we shared a goodbye to Lou Diamond Phillips, Zahn McClarnon, and many others for their work over at the link here. Even with filming done, we know that this won’t be the last time we discuss Longmire at CarterMatt leading up to the premiere. (Photo: Netflix.)
