Doctor Who season 11: David Tennant doesn’t see Olivia Colman hire happening
Speaking per Entertainment Weekly, her Broadchurch co-star / former Doctor himself David Tennant suggests that one of the biggest ones simply related to her schedule:
“I really don’t think that’s a serious option … Olivia is busier than any other actor on Earth. I don’t think she’d be able to suddenly take four years to go to Cardiff. I don’t think her schedule would really allow it whether she wanted it or not.”
Personally, we do feel confident that it’d be a thrill to see Colman in the role, but it is rather hard to argue against Tennant’s logic here that she just does not have a whole lot in terms of open hours in the day. She’s done so many other shows, and there are many others likely to come down the pipe.
We would be all for there being a female Doctor, but as is typical fashion, we do think that most of the names floating around out there are simply chatter for the sake of chatter. The past couple of hires have all been reasonably unexpected; neither Matt Smith nor Peter Capaldi were mentioned as frontrunners until right before their castings were official. Everyone claims to know the answer, but typically it’s spun more into people who we’d all like to see hired on the show as big-time fans of it.
This Doctor, whoever it may be, will be formally introduced later this year at the end of the Christmas Special. While a regeneration may have been teased in the finale promo, it’s hard to imagine that it’s this close to happening given that Steven Moffat is still writing the Christmas Special. (New showrunner Chris Chibnall, also of Broadchurch fame, will be penning the part of the special featuring the new Doctor, even if it is only a few lines.)
