Poldark season 4: Could Jud return in the future?

Jud

If there is one thing that Poldark season 3 missing, it’s Jud Paynter. He’s Ross’ manservant, and a good source of comic relief in a fairly serious show.

Unfortunately, you’re not going to be seeing more of Jud anytime soon, as actor Phil Davis has already confirmed that he won’t be a part of this season. What gives there? It’s really nothing malicious, and it doesn’t seem as though there’s any ill will. It’s just a case of Davis getting a better opportunity for the near future, and him not having as much to do in season 3 had he decided to take part in it.

Speaking on the subject to Radio Times, Davis had the following message to pass along:

“The truth of the matter is Poldark got in touch with me, with my agent, before series three and said, ‘We don’t have much of a storyline for you so if you’re in the series it won’t be the whole thing, it will be a couple of episodes really’.

“There’s so much serious stuff going on in this series of Poldark, the little comic scenes get in the way, I think … So it was good of them to tip me the wink so I could look for other stuff. And I was offered Riveria which I was in for eight out of the ten episodes, so it seemed sensible to do that. And I couldn’t do both as they were shot at the same time.”

Davis made it clear that since Jud hasn’t been killed off that it’s absolutely possible that there could be a chance to see the character down the road in the future (much to our delight). That’s just something that we may have to find out more about when the time comes, since Debbie Horsfield and the show’s producers have not said a whole lot publicly yet about what the story for season 4 will be. Hopefully it will include a little Jud magic.

For now, what we do know is that there will officially be a fourth season of the show, as that was renewed some time ago. Beyond that, though, the future for the series on the BBC is unclear. Given that many British dramas do tend to run a little bit shorter than shows in America, there is always a reason to worry about a show’s long-term future.
