Supergirl season 3: Is Sharon Leal leaving? Actress lands new gig

Sharon Leal

The roster of recurring players on Supergirl season 3 could be changing, and it’s thanks in part to this new slice of Sharon Leal news.

CBS has confirmed that Leal will be joining the upcoming Alan Cumming-led drama Instinct, which is coming from former Royal Pains executive producer Michael Rauch. She will be a series regular on that show in the role of an unnamed character leading up a unit of the NYPD. She is close to Lizzie, a character played in the pilot by Bojana Novakovic. This role is a recasting-of-sorts; it’s not the same role that was played by Khandi Alexander, but it’s close.

As for what this means in terms of Sharon Leal making future appearances on Supergirl season 3, it’s best not to write anything off as of this time given that the door is still open for some more opportunities. The big thing to remember here is that with Instinct being only a midseason show, there may be opportunities for her to make some sporadic appearances over the course of the CW series, provided that she gets the okay from CBS. Given that Supergirl airs on a network partly owned by CBS, that should further along her cause more so than anything else. We’ve certainly seen already with Katrina Law, who was on Training Day this past season, that actors can do multiple shows even if their roles are slightly reduced.

On Supergirl season 3, you saw Leal in the role of M’gann a.k.a. Miss Martian, a White Martian who eventually became a love interest and companion to David Harewood’s J’onn J’onzz. The problem that Supergirl has is that there are only so many people it can book as regulars or major players; while they are losing Floriana Lima (who will appear in a recurring capacity), they are promoting already Katie McGrath and they have a rather-big roster elsewhere. Add to this the first appearance of Odette Annable as Reign and then also whatever is happening to Chris Wood as Mon-El.
