Quantico season 3 sets Code Black creator as showrunner

Michael Seitzman

When Quantico season 3 airs in the winter / spring of 2018, there will be a new metaphorical sheriff in town. He also happens to be a busy one.

Michael Seitzman, who is perhaps best known as the creator of Code Black over on CBS, will be taking over the reigns from Josh Safran, who ran the first two seasons of the show. Seitzman seems to be the right choice for the position for a few different reasons.

Studio Connections – While Code Black is a CBS show, it is produced by ABC Studios … which is the same as Quantico. It’s someone the studio knows and trusts can do a good job.

Knowledge of more procedural stories – While Quantico is not expected to become the new NCIS by any means, there are indications that the show will choose to move more of these elements moving forward. One of the bigger issues with the first two seasons was that there was too much going on, and the stories weren’t clear and were jumping between a couple of different places. The time jumps didn’t help that, and the show did get better when it shifted back towards a different timeline at the end of the second season.

Quantico hot take: The show really should have considered having the entire first season be about the academy and everything going on there. That was compelling enough, and it almost had this fun Harry Potter / law enforcement vibe to it.

Familiarity with the source material – One of Seitzman’s other major TV credits at the moment is the drama series Intelligence starring Lost actor Josh Holloway, and this show had a number of familiar subjects and tropes to it. He knows how to tell stories about government intrigue with good guys and bad guys.

The big elephant in the room is how Seitzman can feasibly handle doing two different shows at the same time. Go ahead and usher that elephant out the door! Code Black never does a full season, and odds are season 3 will run between 13 and 16 episodes. Meanwhile, Quantico is also looking at a reduced order of 13 or so episodes given its midseason premiere. Granted, Code Black is also coming at midseason, so the two shows may be airing concurrently.
