Zoo season 3 premiere review: The Mitch, Jamie fantasy we’ve all been waiting for

Zoo Mitch and Jamie

It’s been a while since we’ve had new episodes of Zoo on CBS, but the crew is back with a brand new challenge. This season is going to be all about the hybrids and how our team is going to be able to handle the new threat. Add on top of that the world’s issue with being sterile after the Sheppard’s released the TX gas and our team has a lot on his plate. The season 2 cliffhanger of Zoo had a serious time jump of 10 years and introduced an older Clementine who’s revealed that Mitch is still alive. So where is Mitch? That’s still part of the mystery and something that we’re hoping is going to be resolved in the premiere since he’s such an intricate part of this team. Tonight’s Zoo premiere should be a grand reunion… at least that’s how it plays out in our head.

Let’s start with the hybrid problem: Humans have managed to keep them barricaded to the West Coast, but there are still people that find themselves stuck in the Hybrid zone and that’s where Jackson comes into play. He’s been part of an evacuation task force that helps people trapped in that zone. It’s a very post apocalyptic world in the hybrid zone, but one that Jackson has great control over with the use of lions. Also, it seems that Jackson has found himself a new girlfriend – a beautiful blonde woman that referred to him as “babe”. We don’t know much about her yet, except that she has great chemistry with him, but to be fair Jackson could have great chemistry with a floor lamp – he’s incredibly charismatic.

Meanwhile in Michigan, Abe and Dariela have set up a lab where they are working on a cure for the sterilization problem. Abe has gone to medical school and is still working with Jackson (remotely) on both the hybrid problem as well as the sterilization issue. After learning that Mitch is still alive they are working with a woman claiming to be Clementine to find him. She has stolen documents revealing that her father is in some abandoned lab Siberia floating around in a tank that’s been keeping him alive for the past ten years. They are in a race against time since the IADG is also wants Mitch – who is going to get to him first?

Unfortunately, it looks like the IADG has gotten to him first, and after busting him out of his water tank he’s still alive. Our biggest question with this is: If he could live without this tank, then who has been keeping him in this watery prison all these years and why? No answers on that tonight, but we want them eventually. Even though the IADG has Mitch alive, he’s unable to speak or communicate in any way.

Next let’s move on to what’s been happening with Jamie since she’s the one person that has had very little spoiler information floating around before the premiere. She’s in New York, living a fabulous life as a well known author, but there’s more to her then meets the eye (as there always has been with Jamie). She’s still using the flying lab as a way to find the last remaining Sheppard named The Falcon and being accosted by (wait for it), detective Logan. Yup you read that right, Logan is now a detective with the NYPD and at some point along the way, she and Logan were dating. He promises her that if she doesn’t stop this obsession with finding the Falcon that he will have her arrested, but none of us believe him.

When Clementine calls Jamie and tells her that Mitch is alive and needs her help, Jamie doesn’t believe it, saying that she spent years already not believing he was dead and searching for him. After some convincing, Jamie agrees to check out Clementine’s lead. Did anyone else’s heart swell when Jamie pulled out Mitch’s broken glasses? Once Clementine has Jamie’s help she leaves Abe and Dariela behind – something feel off about the whole thing and of course it is. Once Clementine gets to the plane she lies to Jamie telling her that Abe and Dariela will be catching up with them later. Things get even more uneasy when Jamie tells Clementine that she looks different as she hides from Jamie that she has a gun. Add to that the fact that there’s another Clementine in Siberia working with the IADG to find her dad and we have so many different theories running through our heads.

For all the Mitch and Jamie shippers out there (like us), we had a chance to see what Mitch has been dreaming of while floating in this tank all these years and it involves, Jamie, a log cabin in the woods and very little clothing. Ten years later and she is the thought that is keeping him alive. Now all we want to see is this Mitch and Jamie log cabin scene actually happen outside of Mitch’s fantasy, is that too much to ask? Over all, this premiere gave us everything we wanted to see: Updates on all of our team members, a new mystery with all the different Clementine’s and a little Mitch and Jamie romance. If this pace keeps up this may be the best season of Zoo yet. Episode grade: A
