Supergirl season 3 brings in new showrunners; what this means

Queller

With Supergirl season 3 gearing things up now, there are a couple of different things to be excited about. First and foremost, you’ve got the presence of new showrunners!

According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, the series will have Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner joining Andrew Kreisberg as co-showrunners for the upcoming batch of episodes. Ali Adler is departing her position due to a new overall deal over CBS, but will remain on board as a consultant.

This move was one that was easy to project for a little while now. Queller and Rovner have been the faces of the show for a little while now, and have been appearing in many CW videos discussing upcoming episodes. You’ve long gotten the sense that the two of them were being groomed for bigger positions with the show, and this is the metaphorical proof in the pudding for that very thing. They’ll have a chance to oversee everything related to the show starting with the premiere filming later this summer.

At present, Kreisberg is right up there with Greg Berlanti as the jack-of-all-trades for the CW superhero universe, given that he is also actively involved with the filming of The Flash. The way that the CW superhero universe seems structured is that Kreisberg works on both this show and The Flash while Marc Guggeheim works on both Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Berlanti oversees everything, and there are individual showrunners at many of these programs (see Wendy Mericle or Phil Klemmer) who handle many of the overall duties on the show, as well. There is a smart hierarchy designed here so everything at an individual level is cared for while there are also some great bits and pieces of connective tissue making sure the shows work in harmony.

As for what’s coming up on Supergirl season 3, the big news is that Odette Annable will be taking on the part of Reign, the famed worldkiller and Big Bad for the season. The show’s vision for her at the moment is not altogether clear, but she’ll be around for much of the story to come.

If you do have any individual thoughts on the promotion, be sure to share them in the attached comments!
