What a Reign season 5 could have been on The CW

Reign season 5

Could a Reign season 5 have happened on The CW? Without even seeing the series finale just yet that is set to air on Friday night, the answer there still feels like a clear “definitely,” and for a wide array of reasons.

First and foremost, we know that there is so much more story that could have been told here, given that there could have been another 13 or so episodes spent on where Mary is going into the series finale leading up to her eventual defeat. You didn’t have to get to her death in the fifth season, but you could take your time getting to all of the juicy events that happened before she was captured and more or less imprisoned in various castles and houses. There was a whole lot more story to be told.

So why aren’t we getting all of that in the same pace that we’ve gotten the entirety of the story of Mary to date? The simplest answer that one can offer when it comes to that is that the ratings on The CW just weren’t good enough. In giving the show a season 4 renewal, the network gave the writers a chance to come up with some conclusion. However, there was clearly a decision made to not just rush through the later parts of Mary’s reign just because it was the final season. It felt much like the same show, and that does mean that there is more that viewers can speculate over — not so much in terms of events, but the show’s interpretation of them.

Unfortunately, the odds of a revival down the road also seem slim because of the low ratings. For now, let’s just be grateful that the show got four seasons, and that a network like The CW decided to tell a story with this much history to it. It’s different from the vast majority of their programming in pretty much all aspects.
