Outlander season 3: See Sam Heughan’s message on last day of filming

Heughan's message

Outlander fans, it all begins. It’s already morning over in South Africa, and we write this late on a Thursday night on the West Coast. The cast and crew are getting set now to film what is the final day of season 3. Sam Heughan’s message on Twitter is all of the proof you need.

In some ways, this image (fun and anachronistic as it may be) is a good microcosm to the effort that goes into making this show as great as it is. For every one actor you see on screen like Sam, there are countless people working behind the scenes, whether it be to establish the right lighting, to make sure the costumes are on-point, or to be there to film and produce and make sure that the lines come in at perfect sound quality. All television shows are a team effort, but this one even more so given that there are SO many members of this team. It’s a huge, ambitious team, and in South Africa many established crew members from Scotland came down and worked with the local crew, some of whom were familiar with Starz already thanks to Black Sails.

As for what sort of footage is being filmed on this final day, there is no guarantee that it will be the last scene of the show. Things are often filmed out of order, especially for a show like this that does film all of its episodes prior to the premiere airing. (That’s a little bit harder to do for a network show that has to film concurrently.)

As the show gets into the day, let’s congratulate everyone on a job well done, and for putting all of these crazy hours into making this show as good as possible. There have been night shoots, extremely long day shoots, dealing with difficult conditions, and of course the natural challenges that come with working on a show. For the Outlander cast, that includes getting the period right and understanding the characters as written by Diana Gabaldon. It’s a difficult job, but it’s one that they’ve perfected over time.

Also, thanks to the readers who joined us on this long journey covering this season, and checking out the almost-daily updates. We’ve had fun writing about everything from the silly to the serious, and there’ll be more coming in the months ahead! Rest assured that this is far from the end. (This sounds a little like some sort of acceptance speech, but we’ve still got all sorts of good stuff coming.)

For now, tell us your favorite memory from Outlander season 3 filming in the comments!
