Last Man Standing season 7 revival could happen at CMT
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the country-music network (which already airs repeats) is looking to bring the Tim Allen sitcom back on the air. While there is nothing signed on the dotted line yet, there is a history of CMT reviving canceled ABC shows. They already did so with Nashville, and struck a deal with Hulu where they would work together in order to ensure that the show was properly paid for. Given that Nashville was renewed recently for a season 6, it seems as though that arrangement ended up being a success story for them.
There are still some issues that could keep a Last Man Standing revival from happening, most notably that the show is not cheap to produce from a comedy standpoint. Allen’s fee alone makes the show a challenge, and then you have a rather large cast beyond him. It’s possible that you trim down on some of that, or just fine a model with a streaming partner where you can share in some of the funding.
The choice to shift to CMT, which has the majority of its viewership in the heartland, makes perfect sense. There was some controversy about whether or not ABC canceled the show for its political leanings, but this is a network with a strong conservative base. The network picking it up is a great play to bring many of those viewers in; you have to remember that this is a fairly divided culture, and the network making a move that is interpreted as “we’re on your side” could mean that many of these viewers stay loyal to them and decide to check out some of their other shows.
If a deal does happen, we will be sure to let you know when it does. Depending on if they can round up the cast, the revival could happen at any time.
