Absentia spoilers: The scale of Emily Byrne’s case
The photo below via the show’s official account gives you the best sense that we’ve had so far of the utter scale of Emily’s case, how far it is spreading, and just how it is being covered. There’s clearly a media presence around it, and that does make some sense when you consider what she’s been through. If there was a woman who disappeared only to reappear many years down the road, this is the sort of thing that would be a subject of conversation and media buzz. It makes a good deal of sense that it would happen in this fictionalized world.
In getting back to the photo, you see Alice (Cara Theobold), Nick Durand’s new love and Emily’s former husband, shielding Flynn from the spectacle going on outside her front door. What this means is that either she’s being a protective mother, or she is doing her best impression of someone who is a good mother. There is already a great deal of speculation out there about this Alice character, her motives, and if she’s connected in some way to Emily’s past. It’s easy to speculate that her presence could be meant to throw Nick off of the case; however, it’s also possible that maybe it’s not anywhere near as sinister. Maybe she is an innocent in all of this and her world is being turned upside-down.
Over the ten-episode first season, some answers will likely start to come out — but this is not necessarily the end of the road for these two. Over the course of the season, there will be more opportunities to watch these characters develop, and the mystery will start to become all the more illuminated.
To date, Absentia is officially set to premiere on several AXN networks in Europe (check some of your local listings), and then also Showcase in Canada. There is no official U.S. home; hopefully, the news will be announced down the road.
