Could a Famous in Love season 2 with Bella Thorne happen on Freeform?
One of the big challenges when it comes to gauging the future of this show, even more so than any other on the network, is that its entire season was available in advance. Those numbers are more difficult to track, and the numbers that are out there (the show is only average slightly above a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic in the live ratings) are deceptive as a result. There are many more people who’ve seen the show than the ratings indicate.
It’s as a result of this binge model that show executive producer Marlene King does have some optimism. Speaking per Deadline, she had the following to say:
“I’m finding that more and more people who have binged… are starting to watch it live with us because we were doing a lot of social media. Although we were nervous about it, it’s exciting because a lot of people have already seen the show.”
More than likely, this is a decision that won’t be clear until later this summer, but the idea of ordering more Famous in Love is certainly intriguing from the vantage point of content alone. There aren’t too many shows that chronicle the process of becoming a star and dealing with some of the various pitfalls that could come along with it. There are also few better people to tell this story than King, given that she’s watched many young men and women over on Pretty Little Liars become enormous stars overnight to the point where they can now star in movies or their own television shows. She can explore different avenues of what happens when you become a star, including how you’re treated by the media and other people in the industry.
It was smart for Freeform to consider alternate ways of viewing for this show, mostly because this is them recognizing that the landscape, especially for young viewers, is changing. It’s harder to convince people to wait a week in order to watch new episodes; many would rather wait at that point and just burn through several on their DVR or on a streaming platform.
