Mark Gatiss uncertain on his Doctor Who season 11 future

Mark Gatiss

While Doctor Who season 11 is the last for both showrunner Steven Moffat, frequent director Rachel Talalay, and its star Peter Capaldi, the status of one Mark Gatiss remains unclear. While he is not an executive producer on the show like he is alongside Moffat on Sherlock, he has penned episodes for every Doctor since the show was brought back to the BBC. You would think as a result of this that he would be invited back for another outing, but his closeness to Moffat does cloud matters to a certain degree.

For the time being, this is a decision that Gatiss seems to be debating intently. For more on that, take a look at what he told Entertainment Weekly on the subject:

“I don’t know. It’s the end of an era … Obviously, I’ve worked so closely running Sherlock with Steven. We’re the only two people who’re still there from when Doctor Who came back. We both wrote for Christopher Eccleston’s season, so we’ve been there for 12 years now! So there’s definitely a sense of the ‘end of an era.’ But I love the show and I never say ‘Never.’ I’d be very happy to do some more Doctor Who. But I have to see where Chris Chibnall is going to take it. I’m actually excited about seeing it without knowing anything about it.”

Our feeling is that with the sense of history that is there for Gatiss with Doctor Who, he will absolutely be invited back at some point. The ball may then be in his court as to whether or not he actually wants to come back for more. The decision may be up to him; he is a prolific writer, and with that there will likely be interest with him and almost ANY project.

If you missed it…

There is some other big news out there already about Doctor Who, including the reports via Russell T. Davies that the replacement for Capaldi has already been cast. you can read more on that by heading over to the link here right now. If this is the case, all signs do point to the show announcing their new lead later this summer.

Do you think Mark Gatiss will and should return for the next era of Doctor Who, whatever that may be? Feel free to share some thoughts in the comments. (Photo: BBC.)
