Dark Matter season 3 premiere review: Two, Nyx say goodbye
To think, that all happened within the first two minutes of the episode!
Here is what we learned in the aftermath — The Android didn’t have much information on the whereabouts on Three or Six, and Five didn’t get a whole lot of consolation from her after it. She lost contact shortly before the explosions, and while Five had to deal with that, Two had to deal with the fact that the version of Four she knew was gone. Betrayal is not an easy thing to get over.
Oh, and a quick reminder that Nyx is dead — not that any viewers needed it, but Android still passed that along for the sake of all of the characters.
Hey, Three is alive!
Here is the good news, though it probably doesn’t make it for those of you bummed over the death of Nyx. Three found himself in a place where his heart was still beating, but still at Anders’ mercy proclaiming that Ferrous Corp were the true enemies there. It’s true — what’s more space sci-fi than a terrible organization with mysterious soldiers with dark motives?
Not long after Three’s reintroduction, we started to proceed into the next order of business, otherwise known as Operation Get the Rest of the Team Together So Nobody Else Dies. A little more complicated than you would first think. Two was determined to reunite everyone at all costs, even though she and Six found themselves in a position where they were slowly being drained of oxygen. In the process, she got a chance to see Nyx and was told that she shouldn’t blame herself for what happened. This was a chance for her to also have a little bit of closure. Smart move on the show’s part — if you are going to see a character off, you may need to find a way to do it. Still, she pulled through, and maybe getting that closure was essential to that.
Let’s get back to Three for a moment, since the team didn’t get to him in time to ease off his confrontation with Anders. The Galactic Authority showed up, and he effectively lied to them. At first we were ready to curse Anders for it, but maybe he wasn’t so bad after all? He eventually gave the Raza team the essential information in order for the team to track him down.
By the end of the hour, everyone on the Raza crew was back together, enjoying their dinner with Android’s signature ingredient: Basil. It was a family dinner! Given everything that they’ve been through, this is a family that does need to stick together.
Over with Ryo…
The court politics were probably the slowest part of the episode, mostly because this was a story that slowed down the pace with everything going on elsewhere. The big reveal here was simply that he offered up a position to Teku, who accepted. Misaki, however, seemed NONE TOO PLEASED about it.

Maybe this will become a recurring theme here (it’s a little too early to tell), but for now nothing comes close to topping Android emerging from those boxes with the two guns.
Final verdict
The reality is that Dark Matter is not a show for the faint of heart. It’s probably the most hardcore science fiction on the air in that it requires a great deal of concentration and attention to detail. For those who do muster that, the merits are very rewarding.
There was a struggle for the premiere to maintain the frenetic pace of the first few minutes, and there were a few issues keeping the drama at 11 throughout. Nonetheless, though, the ending established fantastically the course of the remainder of the season: Two wants Ryo’s head on a pole (metaphorically), and this should be the driving force for what’s coming next. Grade: A-.
