Selena Gomez defends 13 Reasons Why over dark content
However, why should you avoid graphic content if it’s right for the story that is being told? Viewers have to make the decisions that they want, and the same goes for parents. There are certainly warnings aplenty surrounding the show as it is.
Speaking on the subject of the series in an interview with Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, one of the executive producers in Selena Gomez was quick to defend the nature of the content:
“The content is complicated. It’s dark and it has moments that are honestly very hard to swallow, and I understood that we were doing something that is difficult, but these kids today are so exposed to things that I would never even comprehend when I was 8. My cousin teaches third grade and they’re doing things and saying things that I couldn’t even fathom.”
Gomez was originally going to star in the series as Hannah back when it was being plotted out as a feature film, but that changed over time and she stayed on in a behind-the-scenes role.
One of the other things that is known now is that this is clearly not a show that is going to be going anywhere in the near future. 13 Reasons Why is plotting a second season, one that could still even feature Katherine Langford despite Hannah’s death the first time around. Let’s just say that Clay and others are still going to be very much impacted by what happened with her. If they weren’t, it would be easy to question if they were fully human.
