Constantine animated series: What does Matt Ryan know?

ConstantineIt’s been a good while since the news first broke about a Constantine animated series coming to CW Seed, one featuring Matt Ryan as the title character. How much more is known now? Well, let’s just say that some details are still being finalized.

This weekend in London there is an epic edition of the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest going on, and while there Ryan had a chance to touch briefly on the upcoming project. Unfortunately, there wasn’t too much that he could offer in terms of specifics beyond that the show would be taking on a very popular storyline from the comics. (The convention shared the tweet below of his comment.)

There are enough famous storylines from the Constantine universe that this doesn’t offer up much in the way of information; personally, the hope is that this CW Seed series could be used in order to further introduce some new characters who could then become a part of the larger universe. While Ryan has only appeared to date in one episode of Arrow, the start of this animated series does lend itself to the notion that more appearances could be coming. He’s got a proven history now with Oliver Queen, and given what’s going on much of the time on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow it certainly seems as though they’ve got a use for someone with his skill set. (Also, the idea of John Constantine and Mick Rory in the same room is something that feels incredibly amusing.)

In some ways, the CW Seed series is a way for the network to gauge the appetite that is out there for the character. With that, if you love John Constantine, be sure to watch it many times over! Popularity is one of the best ways to guarantee that there will be something more with the character coming up, even if it’s not the return of the full-fledged character like we once saw him back over on NBC.

The one thing that we do know with confidence is this: No one seems better equipped for the passion and the gravitas of the role than Matt Ryan. He’s been tremendous in every appearance.
