Following tonight’s finale, what is the state of Chicago Justice season 2? Is this a show with a chance still of being renewed?
It was hopeful that at one point, there would be news one way or another that the NBC show would be coming back for another kick at the can. However, at present there may be a wait lasting many more weeks. This was something mentioned by network head Robert Greenblatt earlier today, noting that there was no need to decide on the show’s fate for the fall. This may make some sense for a certain degree, given the fact that the show airs on Sundays. In the fall, NBC has NFL football. Therefore, there is no need for them to worry so much about the near future. Nonetheless, the network will need to figure this out long before they get to the fall if they want to ensure that the writer’s room is assembled and they can formulate some new ideas.
Ratings-wise, there is some merit in bringing the One Chicago offshoot back. It posted better ratings than such already-renewed shows as Shades of Blue, and there is good crossover potential to go along with it. With the right lead-in and crossover, this show easily can improve its ratings in a way that some other shows on the schedule do not.
Overall, fingers crossed that NBC brings it back given that the rest of the franchise is continuing, albeit with some changes here and there across the board. After all, Chicago PD will have a new showrunner, Chicago Med will be moved away from its recent position, and Law & Order: SVU will have a different timeslot in its own right. (It’s not clear if there will be any more crossovers between this show and the others anytime soon, though; trying to make this happen can prove complicated when it comes to scheduling.
